Role of Mass Media:

Farming in India is in a worst stage ever. Every day we hear news of some or other farmers committing suicide. For the mainstream media farmer’s suicide is no big deal. They have other big issues relating to International Communication, international terrorism, Yoga, Prime minister’s visit to different countries, Communal violence and most importantly Triple Talaaq.

All the above mentioned topics carry more news value than a farmer’s suicide. Media now practicing on a very limited things. They frame everything, they set their agenda over certain issues and run their political propaganda machine.

Whenever and wherever some incident happening which may harm the reputation of the rulling party, has been replaced by some or other irrelevant stories.  Media is now sponsored by Political parties.
Talk about Agriculture:

India is the second largest producer of wheat and rice, the world’s major food staples. India is the world’s second or third largest producer of several dry fruits, agriculture-based textile raw materials, roots and tuber crops, pulses, farmed fish, eggs, coconut, sugarcane and numerous vegetables.

This is what I found when I Googled “Agriculture in India” which make me feel proud of being an Indian and proud of our Farmer’s. We give equal respect to our Soldiers and farmer’s. Our 2nd Prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri coined the term “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan” at a  public rally. The slogan was given to enthuse the soldiers to defend the country and to encourage the farmer’s to increase the production of foods for making India less dependent on import.

We are still in an agrarian society,  our economy is agricultural economy or I can say Indian Economy is largely dependent on agriculture.  Agriculture is the major source of employment. Yet farming is Dilemma for the farmer’s.

India has a population of over 1.3 billion, among them Two-thirds depend on farming for their livelihood, but the agriculture  sector accounts for just 14 percent of the country’s GDP.
Come to the point:

Farmer’s are now on roads by all means. Some came on road because of their debts, some protesting for their rights. They are fighting for their rights. They took their stand against system. Some farmers were even killed by police force. And some on a temporaey leave from the strikes.

Some Tamil Nadu farmes were on a strike for  more than a month on the capital of the country, from where all major news organization operating. But they hardly get any media coverage.

Recently, the farmer’s of  Madhya Pradesh calls off strike,  this time not because of any crop failure due to draught or flood. Madhya Pradesh is one of  several states that have suffered dismal rains and crop failures in recent years. As per official figures more than 1600 farmer’s killed themselves in the last year .i.e., 2016. Its also a fact that in such cases the official figures are manipulated real figures might be more higher.

This time their good productivity becomes the root of all tensions. They are demanding fair price for their products.  And in return they got killed by the force.

The Farmers have been protesting since June 1 demanding higher prices for their products and debt relief. But the government seems no time to look after the issue. Even when 5 of the protesting farmer’s were shot dead in police firing the Union Agriculture  Minister Radha Mohan Singh was seen doing yoga with yoga guru Ramdev at a public function in Bihar’s Motihari. Recalling importance of Yoga over farmer’s life.

Initially the state government was not accepting the farmer’s were killed by police, they were claiming some anti-social elements were behind the gun shot. But, two days later, the state’s home minister Bhupendra Singh admitted that the lives were lost during police firing.

3 days after death of 5 farmer’s in police firing, where one more death accounted on one hand, on the other the CM of the state Shivraj Chauhan announced to start fasting for an indefinite time till peace restoredin the state. It seems he largely inspired from Arvind Kejriwal, but wrong timing. Both opposition and public calling it to be a mere drama.
